The Ladies League of Eastside Golfers [ affectionately known as LLEGS ] was founded by 3 avid lady golfers in 1976. The founders were Ollie Sykora, Sally Shephard and Ann Ovens Murphy. The league was an immediate success, having an annual maximum membership of 150. For the last 10 years, the membership has been between 112 to 130.

The league plays on alternate Fridays from May through September on golf courses located in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Summit, and Portage counties of Northeast Ohio. All handicapped tournaments are played in four flights, and usually 6 Gross and 6 Net prizes are paid in each flight. Every year a Memorial Tournament is scheduled to honor and remember former members who are deceased.

A brunch for the membership is usually held the last Friday of April and an awards luncheon is held for the members in October.

If you are a lady who enjoys the game of golf; one who enjoys the company of other lady golfers; one who enjoys playing various courses; and one who has an established Index of 40.4 or less, just click onto the 'Contact' page of this website to read and obtain a membership application.

The league welcomes you and hopes you find golfing with us enjoyable while participating in friendly competition at different and challenging courses.

The following items are for your information to better understand the league and its operation.

League Structure

The league consists of approximately 125 golfers from various clubs on the eastside of the city. There are four Officers, six Chairpersons, and 10 to 12 Representatives who constitute the LLEGS Board. Each member is assigned a Representative who is responsible for representing the member in all matters pertaining to the league. The major area of representation is scheduling the member’s participation in each tournament. On the back of the season’s Tournament Schedule provided to you at the beginning of the year, is a list of all Officers, Chairpersons, and Representatives.

Handicaps

The league is restricted to golfers with a USGA computed Index of 40.4 upon joining the league. If the Index exceeds 40.4 during the course of the year, the golfer can continue to participate for the remainder of the year. But no more than 40.4 will be used for determining their handicap for a course and for calculating their net scores. To maintain membership in the league the following year, the golfer must be at or below 40.4. After five years of membership, the golfer is grand fathered and will continue to be a member regardless of her Index. However, no more than 40.4 will be used for determining the handicap at each course played.

It is each member’s responsibility to maintain an up to date handicap reflecting all of her scores. Members playing regularly at Clubs with handicapping services must be sure that they enter all of their scores regardless of where they are played. Members playing regularly at two Clubs, should enter all their scores at both Clubs.

Others who need this service, particularly those in nine-hole leagues, can use the LLEGS handicapping service which is provided by one of our members, Clare Kromar. The member will be charged a nominal fee. Clare will provide instructions at the beginning of the year for how she receives scores and distributes handicap cards. [Note: The handicap service for members from the Manakiki Nine Hole League is provided by the Handicap chairperson, Edie Dieckow.]

Scheduling Procedures For Members With On Site Representatives

Clubs with five or more members in LLEGS will have a Representative from that Club. On a bulletin board, probably in the locker room, a Tournament sign-up sheet will be posted. A member must sign up at least 10 days before the day of the Tournament. This date is shown on the sign-up sheet. The member must indicate walking or cart and their latest handicap index.

The Representative will receive the schedule of tee times eight days before the tournament and will post the pairings sheet on the Club’s bulletin board. If, for whatever reason, a member is not at the Club, she should call her Representative for her tee time.

Scheduling Procedures For Members With Off-Site Representatives

Clubs with fewer than five members in LLEGS are assigned to a Representative at another location. This is done in one of two ways.
1. One to four members at a member Club will be assigned to a Representative in another member Club.
2. One to two members from various miscellaneous clubs will be assigned to a Representative who is designated for “Other Clubs”.
Members wishing to be scheduled for a Tournament should call their information (walking or cart and Handicap Index) to their Representative at least 10 days prior to the tournament. This date is shown on the Tournament Schedule. The Representative will receive the pairings schedule eight days before the tournament and will call the members with the information. Individual arrangements for using email can be discussed with the Representative.

Important Note: If a member is using the LLEGS handicapping services provided by Clare Kromar, it is not necessary for the members to give her Handicap Index to the Other Clubs Representative. Clare will provide it directly to the LLEGS Pairings Chairman.

General Scheduling Information

If a member’s situation changes after the pairings have been made, she can cancel anytime up to 5:30 PM the Thursday prior to the tournament by calling the Pairings Chairman directly. Members canceling after Thursday 5:30 PM or the morning of the tournament are assessed a $5.00 cancellation fee.

Members are scheduled into one of four flights. First flight and second flight golfers tee off first from the first and tenth tees followed by the third and fourth flight golfers. Changes can occur to the original schedule and a member could be moved up to an earlier tee time by as much as 13 minutes without notification. Members should take this into account in planning to arrive 30 minutes ahead of their tee time.
Shotgun starts are sometimes scheduled at the request of the golf course and will start at 8:00 AM.

For additional information on scheduling and pairings, a member should read “Important Informatioon” on the back of the Schedule Sheet.

Tournament Prizes

Prizes are given for Low Gross and Low Net in each of the four flights from first place to sixth place. At each Tournament, a member can win in only one of the categories. Low Gross is given precedent in determining prize money. A “Tournament Results” sheet showing the prize money won by members is sent to the Representatives for posting on the Club’s bulletin board. For members who have an off-site Representative, the results will be posted on a portable LLEGS bulletin board displayed at the following tournament.

The names of winners for each Flight are sent to the Plain Dealer to be included in their golf results column on Saturday. (The Plain Dealer sometimes fails to do this. Look for the information on Sunday and Monday as well.)

The prize money for a member is accumulated through the year and is paid to her at the fall luncheon. The league pays prize money with Kauffman’s gift certificates which are bought at a 10% discount resulting in considerable savings of money to the league. If a member cannot attend the fall luncheon, arrangements should be made with her Representative to receive her prize money.

Skins Competition

Many members enjoy playing Skins. This is an unofficial competition held at each tournament and participation by members is strictly on a volunteer basis. Signing up is done the morning of the tournament before play begins. Look for the sign-up sheets in the same area as all other information and activity. Those participating are responsible for posting their hole-by-hole scores after play is concluded. The winners of Skins are paid at the next tournament, so look for the prize envelope in that same area.
